Bear RugOur comfortable hunting camps are located in excellent game country on the northwestern slope of the Alaska Range in Interior Alaska. Terrain varies from open tundra with scattered strands of spruce forest to mountain with several peaks over 7,000 feet. Most hunting is done between 1,500 and 4,500 foot elevations.

Our fall hunts in this part of the state take place from August through October. Species available include Dall Sheep, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Caribou, Wolf and Wolverine.

Most hunting is done from our permanent camps consisting of cabins or tent frames with floors and woodstoves.

Camp transportation consists of four wheel-drive and track vehicles, although hunting is done on foot.

Hunts originate from Anchorage, Alaska and transportation by air charter from Anchorage and return is arranged by us for clients upon deposit and confirmation of their hunts. The cost of this is not included in the cost of the hunt.

NOTES ON PERSONAL GEAR AND CLOTHING

Since the weather in Alaska is unpredictable and highly changeable we are offering the following suggestions:

Dall SheepBinoculars of good quality are important on your hunt. They will be carried and used daily. Medium-sized binoculars are preferable for carrying and offer a good compromise between larger 7x5O glasses and the mini-size glasses. Binoculars 7x35, 8x3O, 9x3O, and 10x40 we find best.

Digital cameras or 35mm cameras are recommended. We suggest new batteries and plenty of film.  Film with ASA of 200 is a good compromise due to various weather and light conditions. A nylon stuffsack for your camera and film is also useful.

Sunglasses are a must and important due to sun and snow.

Rifles for our big game hunts should be outfitted with good quality mounts and scopes. Calibers should be appropriate for species hunted. 270, 7mm, and 30 caliber cartridges we think best for sheep, caribou, black bear and like animals. For Grizzly, Brown bear and moose, 30 caliber rifles and larger medium bores such as the 338, 358, and 375 are excellent.

We prefer bolt action rifles, especially a rifle that a client has used on prior hunts and is familiar with, and advise doing as much pre-hunt practice as possible.

We recommend 60 rounds of ammunition per rifle, all rounds being the same bullet weight. It is also a good idea to bring a spare scope and mounts rather than a spare rifle. We have at all times a spare rifle or rifles at our camps should one be needed. All rifles are checked and shot upon your arrival at our camps before your hunt begins.

BearRigid gun cases should be left in Anchorage and the rifle transported from Anchorage to the camps in your soft case to conserve room in your aircraft. There is no need for our clients to bring shotguns for birdshooting during the course of our big game hunts.

Necessary footwear should include ankle fit hipboots, and a comfortable pair of leather hiking boots with vibrarn soles. The anklefit hipboots are used more during our hunts than the other footwear. This is because of the necessity of frequent stream crossings and wet areas in the hunting terrain. Two pair of rubber or felt insoles are necessary.

Raingear should include a good quality light-weight 3/4 length parka with hood and rainpants.  We prefer the parka as it is used with hipboots and suffices without the rainpants at times. A rainsuit is also suitable. Medium weight or lightweight raingear in camouflage, green, or gray colors works well.

Clothing should be transported in soft duffel bags. Please do not bring hard suitcases. Also, we would appreciate you limiting your gear to two duffel bags.  Both wool and polypropylene garments are excellent. Combinations of wool outer garments with polypropylene undergarments are our tested choice. Neutral colors are best for outer garments. No fluorescent clothing is required for hunting in Alaska.

All gear listed can be purchased in Anchorage, Alaska.

Sleeping bags are provided for our clients on all our Interior hunts. Clients provide their own sleeping bags for Spring and late Fall hunts in Southeastern Alaska.

A hunter on the Sheep hunt may take a Caribou or Black Bear for an additional $2,500.00. This fee is payable only if the trophy is taken. Trophy tags for these species must be purchased before the hunt begins.

Takeoff point for our Spring hunts in Southeastern Alaska is Yakutat. Our Fall hunts in the Interior originate from Anchorage. We will arrange the charters for your flights to our camps. Air charter expenses are the clients responsibility.
